mata la gatita by barbara calderón
I walk into my mom’s house where lil fluffy kittens with cotton candy hair are scattered about. They’re in the cabinets, the sink, the corners of pantries. I’m trying to collect and protect them all but they keep escaping my grasp. I keep finding cuter and cuter ones UNTIL… I find a pink one. I hold onto the pink kitten the closest because his lil eyes are glazed and milky and he seems to be the runt of the litter. I get frantic because he needs professional care. I don’t want to lose him. I go outside after spotting a crew of kittens hanging out by the fence and I’m holding on to lil pink kitteh. Like a stray bullet, a fat green snake strikes from an overhead tree and swallows my pink kitty whole. I yank the snake to the ground and smash his head. The snake dies, but I believe I can retrieve the kitty from his digestive system by squeezing the contents of his body like a toothpaste tube. I can save the pink kitteh. But no. The snake killed my kitty, and it’s over— like an underdeveloped birdie who has fallen from his nest high in the trees.

WE ARE IN TROUBLE!

Fasciated daisy — Fasciated stems are produced due to abnormal activity in the growing tip of the plant.  Often an abnormal number of flowers are produced on affected stems. Normal branches may arise from fasciated stems. Fasciation is unpredictable and is usually limited to a single stem. It seldom recurs the following year.
